RICHARD RATHWELL was born in Ottawa and educated in Vancouver, where his teachers included the poet Robin Blaser and his friends were poets. A political activist then, he remains one now.
He holds a first-class honours degree in Political Science and English from Simon Fraser University and an M.Phil. in Creative Writing from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. He was subsequently removed from the Ph.D. programme.
His working life took him to Africa on development and aid placements, followed by international leadership roles with organisations headquartered in Europe, where he lived and married. His career included directing programmes for CARE International and Sight Savers, and advising the British government on economic cooperation.
Rathwell writes fiction, poetry and drama. His work has been published internationally and has received literary awards in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Ireland. His writing draws on a lifetime of political involvement and work within the institutions through which societies attempt to change.
After many years abroad, he has returned to Mission, British Columbia, to live simply in the community he left years ago. His novel Canada Strikes Back is forthcoming from 8th House Publishers in Montreal.
